Packing Techniques and Tips
Let's explore the art of efficient packing; reveal space-saving techniques, such as rolling clothes, using packing cubes, and making the most of every inch of your luggage.
If you're like me and you pack enough outfits for 2 weeks but am only going on a trip for 4 days than the packing cubes are your saving grace. You may be asking why do you need so many outfits? Well, you never know if your day outfit is also good for dinner plans. So I always pack an extra, nicer shirt to change into for dinner each day if needed, plus I always pack a workout/hiking outfit and an outfit just for traveling on the plane.
Packing Cubes:
There are two ways when packing with them; one is to create outfits in each cube or two is to sort your clothing and other items into categories such as shirts, pants, underwear, ect. This will help you stay organized and make packing more efficient.
So how do you pack items in a packing cube? Well, decide whether you want to roll or fold your cloths. Rolling can save space and reduce wrinkles, but folding can help maintain the shape of certain items. Experiment with both methods to see which works best for you. I prefer the rolling method, and will use one cube for special items like silk shirts that I will fold, if bringing any.
Start by opening up all the zippers even the compression zippers
Folding/Rolling:
Folding method: begin by placing your larger, bulkier items, such as jeans, sweaters or jackets at the bottom of the cube and layer with smaller items like t-shirts. Fill the cube as much as possible without overstuffing it. Zip up the main compartment then zip up the compression zipper.
Rolling method: take one clothing item at a time. Lay the T-shirt/Top/Dress flat on your packing surface, with the front facing up and roll from the bottom to the neckline. Lay pants/shorts flat with the waistband at the top and roll from the waistband to the cuffs.. Underwear and socks are more efficiently packed when stacked on top of each other. Ensure that you roll it as tightly as possible to minimize space.
3. As you finish rolling each garment, place it inside the open packing cube. Start with the larger items like pants or dresses and work your way to the smaller items like T-shirts and underwear. Try to keep the rolls tight, as this will prevent them from coming undone during travel. Continue rolling and placing items in the packing cube until it is full. You can layer items on top of each other, but avoid overpacking to the point where the cube is bulging.
4. Continue rolling and placing items in the packing cube until it is full. You can layer items on top of each other, but avoid overpacking to the point where the cube is bulging.
5. Place the packed packing cubes inside your suitcase, arranging them in a way that optimizes space and weight distribution. Heavier items should go at the bottom, and delicates or wrinkle-prone items can be on top.
Travel-Friendly Clothing and Footwear
Choosing the right clothing and footwear for your trip is crucial for comfort and style. Creating a versatile travel wardrobe that suits your destination and activities is a smart way to pack efficiently and ensure you have appropriate clothing for various situations.
Research your destination. Look up the weather and climate of your destination during your travel dates. Check for seasonal variations, average temperatures and check what people are wearing on instagram by looking up the destination and most recent posts by date.
Plan Your Activities: Make a list of the activities and occasions you anticipate during your trip. Consider outdoor adventures, sightseeing, dining out, and any special events you'll attend.
Color Palette: Consider your background in possible picture taking on your trip. Select a color palette for your travel wardrobe that consists of versatile, mix-and-match colors. Neutral tones like black, white, gray, and navy work well and can be paired with accent colors to add variety.
Pack Multi-Purpose Clothing:: Opt for versatile clothing items that can be dressed up or down. Examples include a classic black dress, a pair of comfortable yet stylish jeans, and a lightweight jacket that can be layered.
Layering is Key:: Packing layers allows you to adapt to changing weather conditions. Pack lightweight, moisture-wicking base layers, insulating mid-layers, and a waterproof outer layer for protection against rain or wind..
Mix and Match: Focus on pieces that can be mixed and matched to create different outfits. For example, a single pair of jeans can be paired with various tops for different looks.
Consider Accessories: Accessories like scarves, belts, and statement jewelry can change the look of an outfit without taking up much space. They're also great for adding personal style.
Pack Versatile Shoes: Choose comfortable shoes suitable for both walking and more formal occasions. A pair of stylish sneakers or comfortable flats can be versatile and comfortable.
Don't Forget Active Wear: If your trip includes physical activities, pack appropriate active wear, including comfortable athletic shoes, moisture-wicking clothing, and swimwear if needed.
Think About Laundry: If you'll have access to laundry facilities, consider packing fewer clothes and planning to do laundry during your trip. This can significantly reduce the amount you need to pack.
Test Your Wardrobe: Before your trip, try on the outfits you've planned to ensure they're comfortable and functional for your activities. Make any adjustments as necessary.
Be Mindful of Dress Codes:: If you'll be visiting places with specific dress codes (e.g., religious sites or formal dining establishments), pack clothing that meets those requirements.
Be Prepared for the Unpredictable: It's always a good idea to pack a light sweater or jacket even if you're traveling to a warm destination, as temperatures can drop unexpectedly.
Tech and Gadgets for Modern Travelers
In today's digital age, technology plays a significant role in travel. These essential tech and gadgets can enhance your journey, from portable chargers and noise-canceling headphones to slimming down on your cords.
Electronic Organizer Keep your cords organized and in one spot.
Apple AirTag: My new favorite hack. Toss an airtag into your luggage so that you can track it if it doesn't come off the plane with you. This airtag can also come in handy later on your trip if you want to attach it to other things.
Multi Charging cable: Carry less cords with the 3 in 1 cord and charge multiple items at once.
Power Bank: Yes, this power bank has a US built in wall plug for charging but it also has the option to charge with a USB. It also has 3 cables built into it so you don't have to bring an extra cord to charge your phone.
Charging Pad: Cutting down on the cords with using a charging pad to charge your phone, AirPods and watch.
Wired Earbuds with Noise Cancelation: The big thing now a days is to be bluetooth and wireless free so why do I carry wired headphones.. because no matter how loud you make the volume on the plane TV the airplane headphones do not block out the nosie of the plane when trying to watch a movie.
Anti-Lost Air-Pod Stap: You'll want to use your Air-pods on your trip and on the plane so this is a great way to use them and not lose them if you fall sleep on the plane with them still in.
Must-Have Travel Accessories
No travel experience is complete without the right accessories. Here is my showcase of a selection of must-have travel accessories that can solve common travel challenges and make your trips more enjoyable. From travel hair dyer and toiletry organizers to compact umbrellas and foot rest, These items will become your trusted companions on the road.
Pill organizer: Great way to carry a few over the counter medications on hand without having multiple bottles.
Pedialyte: Stay hydrated and stay healthy when traveling in close spaces with a bunch of strangers
Silicone Cream Jars: Easy to get out and comes with mini spatula
Facial Cleansing Brush: Deep clean and exfoliate you face. Sometimes just washing your face still feels like your makeup is still on, thats when I use this.
Electric Toothbrush: Uses a USB charger that lasts 30 days and comes in its own on-the-go case.
Clear toiletry bag: These bags are "TSA approved" at 1 quart size but keep in mind that even if the USA lets you pass with your liquids in them, other countries will still require you to use a ziplock baggy. I actually use a few of these, I keep all my go to items for the plane in one bag for easy reach in my carry on purse under my seat.
Silicon Makeup Brush Holder: Keep your brush heads from damage and your items clean from makeup.
Cordless Hair Straightener Brush: Portable and small enough to keep in your purse. Easily fix your hair when you get off the plane in seconds.
Reusable Portable Straws: I'm all about helping the planet but the paper straws don't cut it and some places don't even give you straws now, so never be without one again.
Plane Foot Hammock : An item you didn't know you needed until you tried it.
Subtl Beauty: I've stopped carrying so much make that fills my liquid bag and started carrying this. I get full face makeup in a compact stack and can swap out colors pieces or create multipurpose stacks.
